Scrapbooking Ideas for Valentines Day Cards
Craft Materials
Before starting this project, you'll need the following materials:
Cardstock, Scrapbook Paper, Scissors, Glue Stick, Heart Shape, X-Acto Knife (for mom), Pencil, Ruler
Valentine's Day is just around the corner! I REALLY wanted to make Valentine cards with my boys and thought this would be a perfect idea!
I got the inspiration from my Scrapbook Paper Christmas Trees I made this past Christmas. I had a friend say, "Very cute! Those could be made into cute Christmas cards…" I agreed, it was a GREAT idea.
Very cute! Those could be made into cute…cards…
For this craft, there is prepping involved BEFORE the kids can start. Steps 1-3 are all your "prep" steps for this craft. Once everything is prepared, your kids are ready to begin.
Getting Started
I stopped by my local craft store and grabbed some Valentine-y styles of scrapbook paper (they were 50% off!!). I really liked all the patterns I found!!
I pulled out a COUPLE different colors of cardstock from my stash for my cards.
Sorry, the ruler isn't pictured, but I would suggest using one!
Step 1 – Cut Your Scrapbook Paper Strips
I pulled out my ruler , and "Trusty" X-Acto knife to cut my scrapbook paper into strips. Once I had them cut into strips, I then cut all my strips in HALF using scissors.
A ruler really helps to keep your strips straight.
Here's all my strips cut in half.
Step 2 – Trace and Cut Out Your Heart
For the card , I used cardstock. I traced out my heart shape from a WOODEN HEART I had for a home craft I was going to do.
Then, I used my "Trusty" X-Acto knife again to cut out my heart shape.
Align your heart where you want it to appear.
I {heart} this Valentine card!
Step 3 – Cut Out Your Background Paper
I folded a piece of cardstock in half, and cut it in TWO for my background (this is where you add your scrapbook paper).
Step 4 – Make Your Scrapbook Paper Heart
Now that your craft is prepared , the kids are ready to get started!! They were REALLY excited about this craft.
I had my boys cover their background paper with a glue stick and place their strips of scrapbook paper over top. Keeping them as CLOSE together as they can.
Once their paper was COVERED, I cut off the excess paper hanging over the edges.
My boys were pretty serious about their craft project!
My 5 year old did a great job adding his strips! The 2 year old wasn't too shabby either.
...proudly displaying their work!
This is where I cut off the excess paper on the sides.
Step 5 – Add Inner Heart to Your Card
Since I HATE wasting paper, I decided to use the cut out hearts for the insides of my cards (I had the kids draw a picture on their hearts).
I used a scrap piece of paper and made an ACCORDION-STYLE pleat.
Then, I added paste to my heart and firmly placed it on the pleat. I added more paste to the OTHER side of the pleat and firmly pressed in the middle of the right side of the card.
My older son was so sweet helping out his little brother.
Accordion-style pleat anyone?
Step 6 – Add Your Scrapbook Paper Heart
I had my son add paste all around the INNER-LEFT side of the card and firmly press down the scrapbook paper background.
Step 7 – Finishing Touches
Once you're DONE, have your kids write or draw a personal message inside. I think their grandparents will be getting these SUPER cute cards for Valentine's Day!
(My boys) excited to showoff their cards they made!
These are cards I made for the step-by-step pictures. I think my boys' cards look BETTER!
My boys and I had LOTS of fun making these cards together (if only you could see outtakes of this tutorial).
I had my 5 and 2 year olds work on these cards. My 5 year old did a GREAT job making it by himself , but my 2 year old (almost 3) needed a some help.
BIG brother was to the rescue helping out his little brother. They have such a great time crafting together :)
